Vung Tau and Con Dao Island
An old port, Vung Tau has been the premier beach resort in
southern Vietnam for most of the 20th Century, and was the
first area of Vietnam to become a popular vacation and health
destination for tourists.
Part of its appeal was its location; the city sits on a small
peninsula about two hours from Ho Chi Minh City, and has five
beaches. It’s a long stretch of soft, sandy coastline
and calm waters that still draws hordes of visitors looking
to escape the stress of life in a city with more than four
million people.
North of Vung Tau, the coastal province of Binh Thuan is
home to several attractive beaches and Con Dao Island, the
latter once a French-run prison for Vietnamese involved in
the independence movement. The island is now home to a major
resort. Con Dao's beaches are generally shaded with evergreen
trees, and the island also boasts some lush forests. It’s
located about 230km from Ho Chi Minh City.
