Phu Quoc Island
Phu Quoc – an island that technically lies south of
Cambodia, but belongs to Vietnam – until recently mostly
consisted of a fishing community, and known among Vietnamese
for the fish sauce that is produced there. The last decade
or so, however, has seen many changes and development, and
today there are a number of good hotels and resorts, and a
variety of water sport activities offered at its popular beaches.
It has remained a little paradise though, with aquamarine
water, idyllic beaches, romantic sunsets and a serene island-style
atmosphere.
The triangular-shaped island has several good beaches, like
Long Beach on the western side, which is also the biggest
and where most of the hotels are located. Just north of Long
Beach lies the island’s biggest town, Duong Dong, while
the second largest town, An Thoi, lies towards the south.
Some well-known, sandy white beaches like Bai Dan and Bai
Sao can be found on the eastern side of the island, close
to some fishing villages that are definitely worth a visit
to see get a taste of local life on the island. Nature lovers
have more to explore around the center of Phu Quoc, where
there’s a verdant rain forest with the Suoi Ban River
running through it, waterfalls and pepper fields. There’s
no shortage of good places to eat – especially seafood
– and shopping opportunities in the form of handicrafts
expertly made by locals.
Getting to the island you’r e left with two options;
either by plane or ferry. The flight from Ho Chin Minh
City to Duong Dong takes less than an hour, and you
can also fly from Rach Gia in the Mekong Province. An
alternative is to catch a ferry from Rach Gia, but flying
is recommended. There are not many hotels
