Savannkhet town itself can be easily explored by foot and has a number of interesting temples, including Vietnamese temple and school and a large Catholic church. Much of the town's architecture is French Colonial.
Major attractions include Sino-Vietnamese architecture, That Ing Hang Stupa and Wat Sayaphoum. It is also a good base to Ho Chi Minh Trail and trekkings to the jungle of the Phu Xang Hae NBCA.
