Personality Suites

Four specially created Personality Suites take their direction from people who have been closely associated with Angkor. Prized memorabilia and original artefacts, the results of extensive research, are some of the well-loved items in the Personality Suites. The suites are named after well-known luminaries such as Henri Mouhot, John Thomson, Louis Delaporte and Henri Marchal. The four suites are located in the centre of the Main Building and look out onto a pool that is modelled after Angkorian royal bathing ponds. The suites also come with an original claw-footed bathtub, a private balcony and are all fitted with a king-size bed.

Henri Mouhot Suite

The Henri Mouhot Suite is named after a 19th century French naturalist who revealed the existence of Angkor to the world. He is the first person who possessed the vision and ability to convey to others the marvels he had seen and had the ability to excite the imagination of the people. Thus, it is Mouhot, rather than those that went before him, who is remembered and conferred the title of the ‘discoverer’ of Angkor. His travel journal describing Angkor was recovered from a forest near Luang Prabang, Laos, where Mouhot died prematurely at the age of 35 in 1861.

John Thomson Suite

The John Thomson Suite pays tribute to the first photographer to set his camera on the Angkor temples, having undertaken the arduous journey mostly on elephant back. He was also one of the earliest travelers to record his impressions of the ruins in a journal. John Thomson was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland and traveled to Asia in 1861. Several of his photos of Angkor were reproduced as engravings in his journal.

Henri Marchal Suite

The Henri Marchal Suite was named after the man responsible for the first successful reconstruction of Banteay Srei. This monument was chosen because of its artistic interest and the certainty of finding virtually all of its stones in the vicinity. Henri Marchal lived in Cambodia for the most part of his life and was the first to commence clearing the jungle around Angkor Wat after his arrival in 1906. He was responsible for directing the conservation efforts around the temples. He died 2 months before the Khmer Rouge occupied Angkor Wat in 1970 in Siem Reap.
