Bago Tour
| 08:30 – 17:00 hrs |
Pick-up at hotel in Yangon and drive to Bago, formerly called Pegu. The town was founded in the year 825 by two Mon princes. Bago, a former ancient port and capital, is situated about 84 km from Yangon. The journey from Yangon to Bago leads through picturesque, rural landscapes of paddy fields and small villages. The highlights include Kyakhatwine Monastery, with over 1,000 monks studying Buddhist literature and the Shwemawdaw Pagoda, which is over 1,000 years old. Repaired after an earthquake in the 1930s, the pagoda has an impressive spire, one that is even taller than that of Yangon’s Shwedagon Pagoda. Also visit the Hinthargone Pagoda, where you can see the Nat Shrine and after enjoy lunch at Hantharwaddy Restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the enormous (55 metres long and 15 metres high) reclining Shwethalyung Buddha image, one of the country’s most revered objects. At the nearby local market, agricultural produce grown locally is on sale. Then visit the Mahazedi Pagoda with its impressive bell-shaped stupa. Just outside Bago, visit the Kyaikpun Pagoda with four 30-metre high Buddha images seated back to back. On the way back to the capital, visit Htaukkyan War Cemetery, situated between Bago and Yangon. It houses the graves of more than 27,000 Allied soldiers. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission administers this beautifully landscaped cemetery. This is a tour that gives insight into the history and culture of this region. Return to Yangon and transfer to your hotel. |
| Option |
Train to Bago: Supplement USD 6 per person. Instead of driving to Bago, for those interested in seeing the ‘real Myanmar’ we propose a two-and-a-half-hour train travel ride to Bago. The carriage is sometimes full of locals and occasionally the train slows and stops at small stations and is not very comfortable but it is a genuine travel experience. |
