Ho Chin Minhs' bustling city centre is where you'll find the city museums and buildings from the French colonial era, giving an air of elegance and history. The US Embassy, War Renmants Museum, the Opera House, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Fine Art Museum are in this area. It's also the location of The Continental Hotel - scene of general subtefuge between journalists, informers and spies during the Vietnam War. Ben Thanh Central Market (Cho Ben Thanh) makes a great place to find inexpensive clothes and souvenirs.
Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon) is Vietnam's largest city and a thriving metropolis. Originally named Saigon after the river on which it stands, Ho Chi Minh in the early eighteenth century was one of the busiest riverside ports in Southeast Asia. The Saigon - Cholon port still remains a bustling port with a population of about 6 million. Outside the city lie the famous Cu Chi tunnels 500 km of tunnels used by the Viet Cong in the French Indochina and American wars.
