The Luangsay Cruise is a one way journey over two days with one night accommodation at the LuangSay Lodge in Pakbeng. You can choose to travel down river from Chiang Khong/Houei Say (the Thai/Lao border) to Luang Prabang OR upriver from Luang Prabang to the Thai/Lao border at Houei Say.

The boats have a capacity for 40 people in comfortable seats and benches. Each seat has an open air vista. We have coffee tables with magazines and booklets to read during your cruise. The central section of our Luangsay boats have bench seats, a perfect spot for a game of cards, to share your Mekong stories, or to have lunch.

On board we have two western style toilets, one at the back of the boat and one next to the bar in the central section. Life jackets are available in a variety of sizes including childrens sizes. There are also rails around the sides of the boat for safety. Luggage can be stored overnight in a large compartment underneath the deck where it can be locked away.  

Includes:

- Transfer from Lao’s immigration to Luangsay boat pier in Houeisay or vv.
- 3 days cruise with stops and visits en route, admission fees at visiting sites.
- 2 night accommodation at Luangsay Lodge and Kamu Lodge.
- Meal plan as mentioned in the tour program (2 Breakfasts, 3 Lunches, 2 Dinners)
- Coffee, tea and drinking water on board and during meals.
- Crew services during the cruise.
- Group insurance. 

Excludes:

- Visa approval and immigration fees in Houeisay for Laos.
- Shuttle boat from/to Houeisay and Chiang Khong Thailand.
- Transfer from/to hotels and boat pier in Luang Prabang.
- International air ticket & Airport taxes.
- Personal expenses such as cell phone, drinks, tip etc.
- Other service not mentioned on this program. 

Remarks:

Basic behavior visiting minority: Do not buy antique jewelry and family heirlooms from villagers. Try to support village income by buying new handicraft items. Do not encourages begging by distributing gifts (especially candies). Alternatively, try to donate to school or thru the mayor’s house in the village the papers, books, pens, etc. Always ask the permission before entering a house if you pass through a village, stop and visit for a while. If not, villagers may think that you come along with bad spirit. Entering an area of forest dedicated to the spirits is not allowed. Touching spirit items is not allowed. Please ask your local guide before doing anything which may cause offenses to the villagers.

Itinerary - Cruise Up River

Day 1

Luang Prabang – Kamu Lodge (Lunch, Diner)

The Kamu Riverboat departs from Luang Prabang pier at 09:00 am. for a cruise up the Mekong river to Kamu Village. On the way to Pak Ou village, at the mouth of the Nam Ou river a visit is organized to Tam Ting (Caves of a thousand Buddha’s). Then boat to Kamu village, arrival at Kamu Lodge and check-in. After lunch at the Lodge’s Sala, choice of different activities to experience original Lao is offered. Dinner & overnight at Lodge.

  • Rice planting and harvesting in surrounding rice fields
  • Gold panning (January to June) in the Mekong. Anything you find is yours!
  • Jungle walks to search for medicinal/herbal plants
  • Trekking through the forest to waterfalls
  • Traditional fishing techniques. You can sample your catch for dinner!
  • Local village visit
  • Archery contest
Day 2

Kamu Lodge - Pakbeng (Breakfast, Lunch, Diner)

Breakfast at lodge, after relaxing and visiting to the village of Kamu, on board Luangsay boat at 11:00 am. for a cruise up the Mekong river to Pakbeng. Buffet lunch is served and a brief stop is made at Ban Baw to observe the processing traditional rice alcohol. The boat arrives at Luangsay Lodge before sunset for overnight stop. Dinner is served at terrace overlooking The Mekong River.

Day 3

Pakbeng – Houeisay (Breakfast, Lunch)

Breakfast is served at terrace around 06:30 am. Visit the morning market (optional) of Pakbeng where the nearby villagers and hill tribes buy and exchange their goods. Boat departs at 07:30 am. for her second part of trip. One stop is made to visit and admire the authentic rural life of hill tribe settlements. Lunch is served on board. Arriving Houeisay before 17:00 pm. (you may proceed to Chiang Rai in the same day.)

Day 1

Houeisay - Pakbeng (Lunch, Dinner)

The Luangsay riverboat leaves Houeisay pier at 09:00 am. for a cruise down the Mekong to Pakbeng. En route one stop is made to observe the rural life of the river tribes along the Mekong. A buffet lunch is served on board. The boat arrives at Luangsay Lodge before sunset for overnight stay. Dinner is served at terrace overlooking the Mekong River.  

Day 2

Pakbeng – Kamu Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Diner)

Breakfast is served at terrace around 07:30 am. Visit the morning market (optional) of Pakbeng village where the nearby villagers and hill tribes buy and exchange their goods. Boat departs at 08:30 am. for her second part of trip. The boat has a stop at Ban Baw to observe the processing traditional rice alcohol. Lunch is served on board, then cruising to Kamu Village. The boat arrives at 14:00 pm. in Kamu Lodge for check in. In the afternoon you have choices of different activities to enjoy with a very original Lao experience as reward. Dinner & overnight at Lodge.

Breakfast at lodge, after relaxing and visiting to Kamu village, cruise down to Luang Prabang UNESCO world heritage town) by Kamu Riverboat to Pak Ou village at the mouth of Nam Ou River, boat stops for a trip to visit Tam Ting (Caves of thousand Buddha’s), then arrives Luang Prabang and lunch.

Information

About Luangsay Lodge

Luangsay Lodge is located and built in a very romantic setting. On the river bank, amidst the lush green hills the Lodge gives the feeling that you have discovered an untouched nature. Constructed in traditional Lao architectural style with solid wood, each room has a bathroom with hot and cold shower, electric fan and mosquito net.

Attached balconies offer a beautiful view of the Mekong River and hills. A central riverbank restaurant is reached by wooden walkways from the pavilions. The well prepared local dishes are served in the main dining room overlooking the river. A small bar offers choice of drinks at reasonable rates. On days when house guests exceed than 20 persons and during high season, Luangsay Lodge provides hill tribe folk dances performed by the villagers.

About Kamu Lodge

Only 3 hours from Luang Prabang and overlooking the Mekong, a unique lodge is opened on a wonderful site. The Kamu Lodge features 20 canvas tents covered by a thatched roof in harmony with the surrounding nature and adapted to the local style. Each tent is decorated with bamboo and wooden furniture items and has an attached private bathroom with shower and toilet including solar-powered warm water and electricity. With only wilderness surroundings the lodge except for a neighboring village, this exclusive and ecological experience in a traditional and simple setting is what we invite you to discover. Travel back to the beginning of the 20th century when people came to Indochina to explore and discover! 

Transfer between Thailand and Luangsay boat pier in Houeisay/Laos

Luangsay cruise starts or ends at the pier next to the Immigration checkpoint at Houeisay, the Lao border town on the north bank of Mekong River. On the opposite bank to Houeisay on the south bank of Mekong River, is Chiang Khong (Chiang Rai province) the Thai border town. Crossing the river from one checkpoint to the other takes only 5 minutes by regular shuttle boat. Chiang Khong is linked by good roads to Chiang Rai town and airport (2 hours drive) or Chiang Saen (1 hour drive). Luangsay may arrange individual or group transfer between Chiang Rai or Chiang Saen and Houeisay or vice versa at extra costs that include road transportation, shuttle boat, porter fee and assistance for immigration formalities both sides of the Mekong River.  

Departure Time
  • Luangsay Cruise Down starts from the pier near the Immigration checkpoint at Houeisay. The Pak Ou boat leaves at 09:00 am.
  • The Kamu Boat Cruise Up leaves Luang Prabang Pier at 09:00 am.
Late arrival customer

Luangsay and Kamu are not responsible for speed boat or ferry arrangement and its related expenses incurred by client who may arrive late and is obliged to catch up with the already departed cruise.
