What to Do at Night in Phnom Penh

Early evening in Phnom Penh you can visit establishments like the Australian-owned Rubies Bar, frequented by young and well-heeled expats or the FCC on Sisowath Quay which has great views and good, if somewhat over-priced, food. The California 2 Café and Guesthouse is where expats and travelers meet and exchange information. These are generally quieter establishments.

Mid-evening places are The Heart of Darkness which is reliable if you're looking for a happening place but somewhat over-hyped and enjoyable in a 'been there done it' way. About three blocks away from the new market is Sharkey's Bar. Located upstairs, Sharkey's is a big and noisy place with an outside balcony and plenty of seating there is a good menu here and the place is safe for single ladies, even though it is somewhat of a pick-up joint for single guys.

Street 51 is also a good place to place to get a midnight snack. The Walkabout kitchen is open 24 hours round the clock and there are a couple of food wagons serving hamburgers and hot dogs in front of Howie Bar and stay open till 4:30am.

For live music, regular venues include Mile’s Jazz Café with live jazz some nights and always on Fridays, Memphis Pub blasts out live rock n' roll and blues Monday through till Saturday, the lobby bar in upscale InterContinental Phnom Penh has a Cambodian and Filipino band that plays pop music, Riverside Bistro has a mix of rock and ballads on selected nights and the Bopha Phnom Penh Titanic is the place to go for a mix of live popular music and open mike.

Safety Notice

Although all tourist areas are safe, do not walk about at night in Phnom Penh. There are many motos to hire (motorcycle taxis – cruising four-wheeled taxis are not as numerous, expect to pay about 1,000 Riel for a short journey) or even three-wheeled cyclos. Walking down badly lit streets at night in Phnom Penh is an open invitation to be robbed/mugged.
